Better Accounting for Emissions Associated with the Purchase of Green Electricity to Achieve True Decarbonization
The GHG Protocol’s market-based emissions accounting treats all green electricity supply contracts equally. However, their impact depends heavily on the spatial and temporal alignment between the location of consumption and production, as well as their ability to contribute to the development of new renewable generation assets (additionality).
To address this methodological shortcoming and anticipate future changes in standards (notably the GHG Protocol, for which a consultation is currently underway), Carbone 4 proposes a framework for assessing the decarbonization impact of various types of green power purchase agreements.
